THE REAL McKENZIES
10,000 Shots
Fat Wreck Chords
· Wanna fight about it?
After a booze-soaked Saturday night, I find myself gasping for what I think are my last breaths. The Tylenol bottle is empty and this hangover will be the death of me. The last thing I need right now is five brutally ugly, dirty Celtic punks screaming into my ear about who can drink more, or that fight where the singer lost a tooth.
But when I put in the latest release from Vancouver-based kilt-clad veteran punks The Real McKenzies, all I want to do is chug the remains of the Scottish whisky that did me in the night before, then smash the bottle over the face of whomever I see first.
Oh, hi grandma.
The 13-song effort is a quick but effective lesson in Celtic counter-culture. Traditional tunes (punked up of course) like "Farewell to Nova Scotia" or the infectious "Bugger Off "(which is undoubtedly one of the best encore songs in a long time) justify the kilts. Bagpipes are not as annoying as you think either, especially with piper Matt McNasty at the helm on "Smokin Bowl" and the instrumental "The Ale is Dear."
I realize its 8:30 on a Sunday morning, but church doesnt start for a few more hours. Whos up for a pint?
