NOAM CHOMSKY
The Imperial Presidency: Sovereignty, Terror and the "Second Superpower"
AK Press/G7 Welcoming Committee

· Hey kids! Make your own left-wing audio collage!

So, you want to find out more about the U.S.’s attempts to avoid the consequences of the Geneva Convention, or how public relations firms are the real forces behind supposedly democratic elections, but you’re not sure you’re up for an hour-long speech (recorded in Toronto in November 2004) from the world’s most cunning linguist. Well, now you can turn your listening experience into a creative endeavour – make your own Noam Chomsky soundtrack!

I’ve tried backing this speech with Huevos Rancheros’s "What a Way to Run a Railroad" (too peppy), King Cobb Steelie’s "Bad Information" and Underworld’s "Little Speaker" (both too beat-y), Rage Against the Machine’s "Guerrilla Radio" (appropriate, but aggressive), Radiohead’s "The National Anthem" (not bad), Kraftwerk’s "Autobahn" (kinda like a science documentary), Dave Brubeck’s "Take Five" and Kid Koala’s "Drunk Trumpet" (both nicely off-kilter), Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (splendidly portentous) and Bauhaus’s "Bela Lugosi’s Dead" (groovy!). And this is just what I had on hand – the possibilities are endless (Carmina Burana, anyone?).

Have fun mashing stuff up, and you never know – you might just learn something too!
