HOUSE OF DOC
Prairiegrass
Maple Nation
· Nice, safe roots music.
Built from a tangled web of siblings and in-laws, Winnipegs House of Doc are good representatives of the newgrass genre currently burgeoning in Canada. Yeah, the abundant Celtic influences file off all the hard edges that make traditional Appalachian bluegrass so appealing. But when youre just as much about your folk and blues influences as House of Doc are, it matters little.
Like many of their peers, House of Doc are as much modern shoegazing music played on traditional instruments as they are old-time revivalism. Still, that doesnt diminish the seamless harmonies and able playing that permeate Prairiegrass. Hitting many important stops along the way a death-obsessed tune, a humorous glad-my-gal-is-gone ditty, flawless a cappella Prairiegrass is sure to appeal to roots fans who prefer an overall tone of contentment to a sense of danger.
