This Is A Riot! is perhaps a bit of a misnomer for the latest album from The Farrell Bros. garage rock and rockabilly tend to work best live, where their frenetic energy can pour off the stage into the audience. Titling quibbles aside, though, the latest outing from the pride (or is that bane?) of Selkirk, Manitoba packs a good chunk of rock n roll punch.
The brothers wear their influences well there are Clash-like moments on the title track, a Pogue-y feeling to "Burning Desire," and Rob Zombie-esque vocals throughout (although not quite as deep and evil-sounding). The lyrics are straight up, with the occasional neat turn of phrase thrown in, like the vision of the girl with the "suede blue eyes." I particularly liked the thump and slap of the stand-up bass, which creates a more subtle and raw sound than its electric counterpart. Check out its impact on the slinky "Wink," the nearly psychobilly "Chains" and the almost punk "Old Glory" and "Fight."
