GARAGE A TROIS
Outré Mer
Telarc

· The jazz-funk supergroup tries their hand at soundtracks.

Outré Mer is Garage a Trois’ third release and the soundtrack to a French film of the same name. While it doesn’t fulfil my wish of having the same out-of-control funkiness as their debut EP, Mysteryfunk, it’s still a worthy addition to their catalogue. Mike Dillon’s vibraphone has a greater presence than ever before, giving the album an almost loungey feel. But make no mistake, there’s still plenty of funk and groove on this album.

Stanton Moore is one of the greatest (and most underrated) drummers to emerge in the last 15 years and he lays down polyrhythms like he was born behind his kit. But perhaps the most amazing musician on the album is Charlie Hunter, who plays an eight-string guitar that acts as both a bass and a lead guitar. "Needles" and the title track have fabulous bass lines and guitar solos and they’re all the more amazing when you consider that Hunter’s playing them at the same time. This isn’t the best thing ever done by the individual members of the band, but they’re still the best damn side-project-supergroup on the planet (sorry Gorillaz), and like the best soundtracks, Outré Mer’s music works even when it’s divorced from the images of the film.
