GARAGE A TROIS
Outré Mer

· The jazz-funk supergroup tries their hand at soundtracks.
Outré Mer is Garage a Trois third release and the soundtrack to a French film of the same name. While it doesnt fulfil my wish of having the same out-of-control funkiness as their debut EP, Mysteryfunk, its still a worthy addition to their catalogue. Mike Dillons vibraphone has a greater presence than ever before, giving the album an almost loungey feel. But make no mistake, theres still plenty of funk and groove on this album.
Stanton Moore is one of the greatest (and most underrated) drummers to emerge in the last 15 years and he lays down polyrhythms like he was born behind his kit. But perhaps the most amazing musician on the album is Charlie Hunter, who plays an eight-string guitar that acts as both a bass and a lead guitar. "Needles" and the title track have fabulous bass lines and guitar solos and theyre all the more amazing when you consider that Hunters playing them at the same time. This isnt the best thing ever done by the individual members of the band, but theyre still the best damn side-project-supergroup on the planet (sorry Gorillaz), and like the best soundtracks, Outré Mers music works even when its divorced from the images of the film.
