Help The Underground save some fuzzy-wuzzy little schnookies. Let me start that again
. The Underground is having a benefit show for Oops-A Dazy on August 13 with local bands The Mad Cowboys, Gudenpist and Thoughtless Action and on August 27 with Inspected by 40, Nebucadnezzer and The Last Act. Oops-A-Dazy is an organization that saves fuzzy animals and adopts them to responsible homes (you know, as in "Oops-a-dazy, I abandoned my dog"). "Wee" Claire (the promoter for The Underground) is calling for any local bands who are interested in playing for future Oops-A-Dazy benefit gigs and you can contact her through www.warehousenightclub.ca.
Calgarys answer to actually, Im not sure who they sound like. Perhaps the Moxy Früvous of hip hop
yeah, thats it The Boygirls are having a CD release party on August 19 at Broken City. Come and check out their cutesy acoustic sound, featuring two of my favourite things in hip hop lyrics about ones own lyrics, and mentioning ones own name within ones songs. You just cant beat it. Opening for The Boygirls will be Calgarys legendary A-Team.
Beatroute magazine (Calgarys monthly music magazine for the young people) and the Calgary Reggae Festival are putting together a tribute to The Clash at The Hifi Club on August 16, featuring Calgarys The Livers (check them out before they relocate their ska-rock-reggae butts to Montreal), as well as Pablo Puentes (bassist for Recipe From A Small Planet).
Free, free, free! Come check out Calgarys longest-running free concert series Cantos à la Carte until August 30 at The Epcor Centre. Bring your lunch every Tuesday at 12:10 and listen to some music courtesy of Cantos Keyboard Centre. August 13 features "light classics" and Gershwin with Michael Hope and Jamie Syer; August 23 showcases Calgary singer-songwriter Amy Seeley (she sounds sort of like Christine Fellows meets James Taylor); and August 30 is a variety of Calgary Operas finest singers. It will make your food taste better, though not literally.
Hey teenagers, the City of Calgary is totally hip and is reaching out to you in a tubular way. The third annual Toast N Jam is happening at Canada Olympic Park on August 11. Urban Youth Worx (a City of Calgary youth outreach program) is putting together this fine evening of fun n pun. Hot young bands including The Heavy Feather Band, Rocktopussy, 9 Volt and last years winners Organized Confusion will perform and compete for prizes and there will also be a graffiti competition (all of the beauty of the art, without the rush of adrenalin that comes from vandalism). The organizers suggest that you come out to "toast" in the sun, and "jam" to the music. Im going to one up everyone by "frying eggs" on a "frying pan" and then "brewing" some "coffee" (if you know what I mean). It looks like fun I might even leave my prejudice against young people at home and check it out myself. Maybe Ill even take a couple of runs down the old ski slope. Dont forget to dress warm, folks.
P.S. Mialologies to Miopus! I accidentally called them "Miopis" in my last 411 column. It's been so hot, I so get confused.
Well, I'm sure that "The Beetles" got thrown around a bit before they got huge, too. Thanks for being so cool about it fellas. I can't wait until next time I'm going to properly spell the shit out of your name!
