| If you've been to a movie recently you've probably seen that cheesy Canadian tourism ad the one with the weird Canadian montage and the words, "Go! Go! Canada Go!" sung at a frenzied pitch. Perhaps we're just too humble to toot our own horns about how cool we really are.
Canadian culture is much more than a 90-second spot in a darkened theatre. This Canada Day, why not do a little background check into why we kick some serious ass?
If it's culture you're after, culture.ca is packed full of resources from the arts to sport. There are excellent links to artists in Canada, government programs, and festivals and events across Canada. Whether you're looking at Canada's role in the diamond industry or audio recordings of First Nations peoples, the sites layout makes it easy to access information.
At the Portrait Gallery of Canada, portraits.gc.ca, you can get reacquainted with Canadian artists and their inspiration by looking into the online collection of portraiture through painting and photography. The site is still a work in progress with many areas under construction, but there's more than enough content to persuade you to come back. If you cant make it to Ottawa this summer to check out the actual building housing the collections, you can take a virtual tour of the physical gallery that showcases a heritage space with a dynamic modern accent.
Now if we could just get that hockey thing up and running, wed really have something to celebrate. |
