DABY TOURE
Diam
Realworld
· Second-generation Senegalese pop.
Daby Toure is the son of one of the Toure Kunda (Toure Brothers), stars of the first wave of African pop music a quarter-century ago. Their albums spanned the full range of West African genres, from dance-fusion to folk, and this versatility was their undoing, as each recording was so different from its predecessor that they never built a following overseas.
Daby seems a bit more focused, with Diam consisting almost entirely of concise (about four-minute) pop songs, built around the acoustic guitar and his likable voice, with well-disguised electronics. Melodic, upbeat, clearly (if conventionally) structured, this isnt as ambitious as Rokia Traorés latest, but it does full justice to his ancestral traditions while being uncompromisingly modern. The opening track, "Iris," is a minor classic.
