A River Ain’t Too Much To Love
Drag City

· Dude’s a shower and a grower.

At this point in his career, Bill Callahan’s songs flow forth effortlessly. It’s almost as if reference points aren’t even necessary anymore – there are always going to be those Lou Reed mumbles and three-chord compositions combined with that Willie Nelson split-second-behind-the-beat pronunciation and structure. But A River Ain’t Too Much To Love really sounds entirely and solely like Callahan and no one else.

At times hilarious and at others characteristically heartbreaking (nearly drowning in "Rock Bottom Riser"), River is spot-on (Smog) from start to finish. From the hushed minimalist cinematic scenes of "Palimpsest" to the propulsive drive of "I Feel Like The Mother of the World" and everywhere in between, Callahan has another perfectly unique album under his belt.
