Local Music

It’s summer solstice again, time for all of the crystal-gazing muffinheads to find their inner unicorn by banging their hands rhythmically on hand drums. I think it’s time to separate music from exercise, and dancing from perpetuating negative stereotypes about white nerds.

Wow, that felt so right. I am sooo bad!

There will be some good times for the whole family happening at the Olympic Plaza and the Epcor Centre on June 18. During Solstice Beat, everyone can enjoy some summer fun at the drum circle from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. If you don’t have your own drum, you can rent one, or make one at the hippy tent – I mean, drum-making tent.

After the summery happy-jams, there’s going to be a solstice world music shakedown at The Auburn Saloon. Juno-award winners Youssou Seck Group, and Beau Temp Zydeco Band will perform, along with jugglers, belly dancers, face painters and jesters.

"Canada needs more singers like Tim Hus," according to Stompin’ Tom Connors. I got that quote from Hus’s website. I wonder if the rest of that quote goes: "… because I’m not going to be around forever and you’re going to need more than just one guy that sounds exactly like me!" You can find out if he looks like him, too, because Hus is having a music video release party at Broken City on June 26. Hus and The Rocky Mountain Band will be performing.

I like jazz, I like water and I like the way that gasoline smells. If you like those things, too, you can get two out of three on June 17 and 18 at Heritage Park. The Jazz Is Society is presenting Jazz On The Lake V, featuring the hideously named RAEJIS Quartet (not to be confused with "Racist Quartet"). These local jazz guys will perform standards while we all drink, and eat hors d’oeuvres and float around the Glenmore Reservoir on the S.S. Moyie sternwheeler. Some of us will also be huffing gasoline out of our packsacks.

If you like the sound of that, you might like to know that Calgary’s Gas Huffing From Packsacks Festival (otherwise known as the TD Canada Trust Jazz Fest Calgary) is happening from June 17 to June 26. Local acts like Bent Spoon Ensemble, PhotoTactic, Kristian Alexandrov, Shannon Gaye, Kodi Hutchinson, Jeremy Coates and Vivianne Cardinal will perform at a variety of venues across town. Of course there are some hotshot out-of-towners who will be playing as well, so keep your eyelids peeled open and pressed against Fast Forward for all the details.
