VERBAL DECEPTION
Avast, ye landlubbers and make way for the formidable crewmen of pirate metal. What, you may ask, is pirate metal? Relax, Lars, this term does not refer to ill-gotten copies of existing musical material, but rather a new and burgeoning dynasty of guiltless pleasure and hard-core electric mayhem.
Horn-helmeted Calgarians Verbal Deception consider themselves to be at the forefront of the latest Viking invasion to sweep North America. Emerging triumphant from a battle of the bands at Saint Marys High School, this metal-wielding threesome is making waves with their new self-titled EP released on Azure Blue Records.
"We just love to sing about pirates," explains Verbal Deceptions singer-guitarist Kresho Klarich. "We do it in a serious way, were certainly not being comical about it, but we do like to have fun. We stay away from the sad, depressing, suicidal lyrics typical of death metal. We prefer singing about rum and partying."
The band rounded out by keyboardist Walt Fleming and percussionist Johnny Iocca recorded a six-song sampler at Calgarys Sundae Sound and has a 10-song CD in the works. Currently this trio of terror is content to patrol their local waters in search of booty, plunder and thunder. And nothing is going to stop them not even the fact that they are only three members strong.
"Even though were only a three-piece weve encountered groups that need five or six members to achieve the same sound we have," says Kresho. "We manage to fill out everything. We dont feel the lack of a bass, and the keyboard acts as rhythm guitar. Its so much simpler working with just three people."
Cresting the briny waves of heavy metal with mystically themed tracks such as "Halls of Illusion," "Northern Shores" and "The Scarab," Verbal Deceptions youthful yet ruthless crew of buccaneers are reviving the original connotations of the word "booty." These wayward sea rats remain true to their roots while bringing their own irrepressibly genuine sense of energy and enthusiasm to every performance, raining red hot riffs and bombastic beats on their audiences at every turn.
"Our main musical influence is mainly European death metal, which hasnt had that much exposure here yet. All of us have European backgrounds, so were hoping to introduce it along with our style of pirate metal." |
