Joe Ceci against moving Cash Corner
Re: "Future of Cash Corner in jeopardy," by Wes Lafortune, City, May 19-25, 2005.

Further to this article about the future of cash corner located in Victoria Park for the last 50 years, I am alderman for Ward 9, representing Manchester, the suggested community for relocation, and I am not in favour of moving Cash Corner. Moving the "problem" from one community to another does not solve the problem.

Sanitizing our downtown and inner-city neighbourhoods as more re-development occurs further disenfranchises people. Cash Corner brings together employers and employees in an informal economy. The issues of safety may be more about perception and feelings of discomfort rather than of actual harm. I believe developing a more supportive system for Cash Corner to co-exist with businesses and new residents is the solution.

Joe Ceci, MSW
Alderman, Ward 9
