| The beaten path is about to become a lot more beaten with warm weather coaxing runners off the treadmills and onto the pathways. Whether you're facing the gym blahs or just looking for a new place to stretch your legs, the web has a few sites to get you up and running.
If youre just embarking on your running career, try calgaryroadrunners.com, a local organization that offers a support network of runners in all categories with a focus on promoting runner wellness and training. An annual membership is less than $40 and includes year-round coaching programs, running clinics and social "beer and pizza" runs.
If youre already a seasoned runner and looking for a challenge on the road less travelled, try mountainrunning.com, "...your information source for mountain and trail running in Canada and beyond." In addition to providing information on a host of runs in Alberta, from Upper Kananaskis to Kootenay National Park, the site offers a history of the World Mountain Running Trophy.
If marathons are more your style, youll appreciate the resources at marathonguide.com, a comprehensive listing of marathons around the world with race results, race calendars and historical records. The site also offers some excellent training tools with running, fitness/training and health/nutrition calculators. Be sure to visit the community portion of the site for bulletin boards on womens running, specific race discussions and training tips.
For now, Ill stick to my elliptical trainer in the gym and cheer on my marathon friends from the sidelines. |
