ROBBIE FULKS
Georgia Hard
Yep Roc

· Listening to this new release from one time major-label debutante and songwriter Robbie Fulks, who beat his head against the Nashville system for years, the problem becomes crystal clear – he’s too damn talented for his own good.

If Robbie Fulks stuck to the ready-for-new-country-radio (but 33 per cent less trite) feel of "Where There’s a Road," the opening track of Georgia Hard, he might have a shot at mainstream success. Or, he could stick to satirical, often downright hilarious tracks like "I’m Gonna Take You Home" and "Countrier Than Thou" and further endear himself to the young-and-alt crowd. Instead, he runs the gamut (this is the guy who has a Michael Jackson tribute album sitting, unheard, on the shelf), forcing listeners to love some songs and others not so much.

Such a wide-ranging scope and the ability to convincingly write any type of song is a definite sign of a smart writer. But if Fulks was less smart, he might be able to win over one particular type of fan and truly cash in.
