RINGSIDE
Ringside
Geffen

·Catchy little pop songs by cute boys. Well, one cute boy that we know of, anyway.

Sometimes, when you have a crush on someone, it merely takes four words to destroy you – I'm in a band. When Balthazar Getty (whom I've adored since my Sassy reading youth) said these potentially lethal words to me, it was a cringe felt around the country. The debut self-titled Ringside album held the power to quash my long-standing adoration. When I finally mustered the strength to listen to it, I could not stop. I handed it over to Kari Watson to ensure that love was not blind... or deaf.

DEVORA BROWN

I’m not going to lie to you – I was skeptical. First of all, I am not a follower of actors. I had heard of this Balthazar character once or twice, but had no idea who he was. I was anticipating a Patrick Swayze-Don Johnson-Bruce Willis effort here, so when I actually listened to the CD, I was surprised that it didn’t suck ("Struggle" is an oddly sexy number, which piqued my interest). Not all of the songs are great, but the smattering of good songs are catchy enough to stick in your head for days. For example, "Spanishfaster" – not a song you could actually dance to (if you’re so inclined), but definitely a make out song. Did I just say that? Must be spring.

So Devora, I think your street cred is intact: Ringside is good. But then again, I also like Klaus Nomi and Journey, so what the hell do I know?

In summation: catchy… yes, good first effort for a pop record... yes, brilliant... not so much, crush worthy... absolutely!
