Canadian music hot off the web
If you follow the current press on our great land, you already know we're the next big thing. It's not just our politics with a certain giant to the south, or our thoughts on gay marriage and the legalization of marijuana and prostitution – it's our music. It seems all those long winters are starting to produce a phenomenon, and it’s one that actually promises to live up to the hype.

Most independent bands are self-produced, with their local record labels helping the cause. The goal may be world domination, but until the U.S. and U.K. press write their blessings, we have them all to ourselves. And we get to watch them when they tour here first – when they’re still mingling in the crowd, trying to get the bartender’s attention.

But it’s hard to follow every show listed in the paper, or the multitude of posters stapled to the entire run of 17th Avenue. How do you know what’ll rock for you?

Start at the source: maplemusic.com "is a website that offers a virtual home where Canadian musicians, and fans of Canadian music, converge." The site is Canadian owned and operated, and features artists you’ve already heard, like Jann Arden, and artists you may not have heard of yet, like Novillero. In addition to selling the artists’ works online, there are links to personal sites, so you can find out more about the band and their sound.

With a huge online catalogue that encompasses rock, jazz, folk, electronica and metal, there’s bound to be a band to add to your collection of Canadiana. No clearing customs or currency conversion needed.
