THE LIBERTINES
What Became of the Likely Lads
Rough Trade

· All proceeds from the sale of this album go towards Pete Docherty’s legal expenses.

If the U.K. music press is anything to go by, the ultimate in cool these days is messing up your big shot with drugs and letting your on-the-cusp band fall to pieces. For a band that was supposed to be saving rock ’n roll, it wasn’t till The Libertines’s Pete Docherty went off his head on drugs and hooked up with Kate Moss that anyone really cared.

Granted, as a song, "What Became of the Likely Lads" could be a perfect epitaph for Docherty and his crew, but the rest of this EP’s odds-and-sods collection of live songs and re-recorded album tracks isn’t worth much. That the same can be said of The Libertines as a whole doesn’t explain why I’m even intrigued as to what this batch of fuck-ups will do next.

I guess they’re worth their weight in tabloids and little else.

2/5
