What’s Up, Tiger Lily?
Orange Grammofon

· Sweden is the coolest country in the world.

So there I was, last autumn, strolling the streets of Paris with a group of friends from Sweden who constantly picked out the hippest, hottest passers-by as fellow ex-patriots from their home country. Coquettish coat-racks and ruffled young gentlemen one and all, Swedes are uniformly cooler, smarter and more attractive than anyone else on the planet. Trust me: I’ve checked.

Orange Grammofon, a new upstart of a label run by four such stunners from Gothenburg, have captured two of Sweden’s most promising bands with a pair of EP releases that act like everything went up-up-up since the swinging 1960s.

Where Captain Fantastic’s brass-led hooks and double-time rave-ups may be slightly more immediate than The Second Band’s subtle pop gems, both bands carry more verve and energy than most of those derivative New Yorkers or their London cousins. And would you believe they’re still in college?

More, please. Big up to Sweden.
