BY THE END OF TONIGHT
A Tribute To Tigers
Temporary Residence

· Emo-instrumentalists prove that being at a loss for words is actually a good thing with their followup to last year’s poorly produced Fireworks on Ice EP.

Known for their insane live shows, the Alvin, Texas quartet By The End Of Tonight has built a loyal fan base. Influenced by metal and punk rock, their brand of instrumental music is similar to the band Don Caballero and I’d say they sound a lot like the tempestuous and rowdy little brother of fellow Texan instrumentalists Explosions in the Sky.

The band roars through their five-song full-length, playing music that defies classification. "Stop, Drop and Roll Does Not Work in Hell" starts off slowly before turning into a thrashing instrumental assault. The song is made up of heavy guitar licks and thunderous drum rolls, making you forget that their drummer chooses to play on a child’s drum kit. Gimmick or not, he can really pound on those tiny cymbals.

"Tigers" softens up with jazzy drums and guitars before reaching a surprisingly emotional climax. This may be the band’s strongest asset – they have an uncanny talent for taking their songs from simple starts to dramatic crescendos. By the End of Tonight play their instruments with a zealousness that sounds like playing could actually bring them harm. They have the instinctual ability to be out of control, but still play with a steady hand. A Tribute To Tigers is not essential listening, but it’s still a lot of fun.
