THE KILLS
No Wow
Rough Trade

· I don’t know about yours, but my garage is pretty darn boring.

Despite their credentials, The Kills have always seemed like also-rans on the coattails of a hipster bandwave. Sure, they’re good and solid openers, but where the Raveonettes are downright dreamy, Royal Trux are sore losers and the White Stripes are catchy as hell, The Kills don’t have much to offer to two-piece garage rock.

At times aping PJ Harvey, at others a Raveonettes-style homage to the Jesus and Mary Chain, No Wow only gets interesting when The Kills stop sounding like The Kills and try something different. Harvey does the likes of "Ticket Man" far better, but "I Hate The Way You Love Part 2" at least shows some kind of range. Best of all is "Rodeo Town," sticking out as the only actual song here.

Bottom-line: Despite all the attitude, de rigeur haircuts and holy-holy record label connections (if it says Rough Trade on the back, I’ll just buy it), it doesn’t mean a thing if there’s no real tunes to speak of.
