| I thought the love had gone. Calgary and I had been having some issues. I was getting crabby with its lack of funding for the arts and poor concert selections. And then I got sucked into the High Performance Rodeo, and found out The Donnas are playing in April. Things were looking up. When I found out about the Olympic Plaza Cultural Districts First Thursdays Crawl, I was absolutely smitten.
On your own or with a group, you can enjoy some of the best food, wine and art events the city has to offer all within a few blocks. At firstthursdays.ca you can get the scoop on whats happening where on the first Thursday of every month. Most of the events are free, or offered at a reduced rate, with some places providing coupons for return visits if you mention "First Thursdays." The Siding Café, situated in the Art Central building at 7th Avenue and Centre Street South, is the meeting place for dinner for the mixer crowd, but events start as early as 10 a.m. Highlights for March 3 include a South American wine tasting at The Cellar (lower level, 137 - 8 Ave. S.W.), an opening reception at INFLUX Jewelry gallery (upper level, Art Central) and Latin dancing till late at The Congo Room (109 - 8 Ave. S.W.).
While enjoying the sites, be sure to pick up an Olympic Plaza Passport at any of the events. You can enter to win a weekend for two in the Cultural District by simply accumulating 15 stamps from different venues by the first Thursday in June. And with more than 30 Passport stops this Thursday, youre well on your way. |
