No ignorant yahoos needed, thanks
Re: Calgarians don’t dance, by Dorothea Flengeris, Rant & Rave, Feb. 17 - 23, 2005

After reading this, the latest "doesn't our city suck" Fast Forward article, I feel compelled to point out that Dorothea Flengeris obviously doesn't know what she is talking about.

I grew up in Calgary, but have lived and travelled around the world since then. I have attended concerts and live shows in some of the most famous venues in the world, in cities such as Toronto, New York, London and Los Angeles. It has been my observation that, the more cosmopolitan a city is, the less likely the live music patrons therein are to whoop, holler and gesticulate like a bunch of ignorant yahoos.

In the Calgary of my youth, it was typical for the first notes of live music to be greeted by denim-clad revellers immediately populating the dance floor with raised fists and cries of "yeehaw," "party" and the ubiquitous "give ’er." Thankfully, this quaint but somewhat embarrassing parochial behaviour has apparently subsided over the years, and Calgarians have deemed to act with some dignity and reserve when viewing live music these days.
