WILLIAM ELLIOT WHITMORE
Ashes to Dust
Southern

· This Iowa native grew up on a horse farm on the Mississippi River.

So, this young feller who sounds like an old man comes out of nowhere (the United States, actually) and releases one of the best unknown discs of 2003 – Hymns for the Hopeless. Why was it so damn good? It was sparse, soulful, raw and country-filled with insightful ruminations on death.

Now William Elliot Whitmore attempts to show he isn't such a morbid bloke. Instead, he wants to be well-rounded by singing songs about hobos and being in love. Save for the eerily beautiful "When Push Comes to Love" and the touching eulogy "Porch Light," disc numero two doesn't have quite the same impact as his debut. But, damn it, he still has a gravelly voice that rivals Judd Palmer (pardon the reference) and he is still riding on points from Hymns For the Hopeless. Don't ignore the dude if you haven't already heard him holler.
