THE FIERY FURNACES
EP
Rough Trade
· I've never met anyone who digs the Fiery Furnaces that I've disliked.
It's not like they're not occasionally impenetrable (what the hell does "T'ord ta tippy tap Tommy tongue-tied talked/ tricked Trish tra trance which church chit-chat" mean anyway?). Making your way through The Fiery Furnaces 80-minutes-of-bliss Blueberry Boat takes time (man does it ever), but that only makes me love them more.
With EP, bro and sis Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger (you couldn't invent those names) collect a few of their favourite B-sides, ranging from the electro-clash beats of "Single Again," the nautical-disaster pop of "Sing For Me" and the catchy as a cold "Tropical-Iceland." Remember how everyone said The Smiths saved all of the best songs for the flip-sides of their singles so it is with the Fiery Furnaces.
Considering this EP, I now have a new set of prerequisites for Mark time. You dig the Fiery Furnaces, you're in. Otherwise, we're through.
