ELEVATOR

· Who would have thought that Rick White would be the big winner in the Erics Trip breakup?
No disrespect to Juno winner Julie Doiron and her heartbreaking solo work, but as Elevator To Hell, Elevator Through and, finally, Elevator, the prolific Rick White (with the help of his wife Tara) has made more of his post-Erics Trip efforts.
While most of his early solo material was shibby-heavy Hobbit rock, August is content to meld eerie male-female harmonies with fuzzy eight-track sensibilities. Reminiscent of vintage Erics Trip, due in no small part to drummer Mark Gaudet, the dark undertones and fluid organic feel of the record are complemented by a guest appearance by Dallas Good from The Sadies. From shimmering drone-rock epics to fuzzed-out punk and back again, August is a bold, albeit hazy trip down memory lane. White has always been good at crafting records that suit the winter months and this one is no exception. Grey and swaddled in sound, this could be the album to keep you moping through till spring.
