SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE

· Welcome the new deep trance.
The terms "folk music" and "psychedelic freak-out" don't often sit side by side very comfortably. Among the few actually pulling it off, Six Organs of Admittance manage the splice like pros.
While on occasion it may seem like you're listening to two distinct records at once (take opener "Eighth Cognition / All You've Left," which splits its white noise wandering and cleanly plucked "song" directly down the middle of the track), Six Organs of Admittance play within both fields particularly well. When, on "Home" and "Saint Cloud," he sticks the two together, monk-like chants echoing in the background, all the pieces work without ever falling into dreaded dirty-hippie, new-age territory. Sure, you can meditate to it, but we're still leagues away from ponytails and classical guitar wank-offs here.
