PETE YORN
Live from New Jersey
Columbia

· It could just be me, but shouldn’t you put out more than two albums in your career before releasing a live disc? Just wondering...

I have come to the conclusion that as far as music goes, it takes a lot more to impress me these days. A live album should offer something to the listener that is unique to the artist’s live performance – not just something that sounds like a less-produced version of the studio album. Maybe it’s amazing vocal performances, witty between-song-banter or great cover songs, but damn it, there’s got to be something to get excited about.

Pete Yorn’s Live From New Jersey is a good live album, but nothing terribly impressive. The 20 songs on the album contain a couple of good covers and showcase some of Yorn’s most popular songs, so why am I not feeling it? I love Pete Yorn and I love all of these songs, so what’s wrong? KISS Alive it ain’t.

Having said that, I’d walk over my own mother to hear Pete say "burrito," but that’s just me.

3/5
