ZEELLIA
Willow Bridge
?

· Slavic soul with a contemporary edge.

If, like me, you feel that there are few things more enchanting than Eastern European music, then you will definitely love this CD. Zeellia is a Vancouver-based sextet fronted by three female vocalists. Formed in 1991, they perform traditional songs that come mostly from the Ukraine and, to a lesser extent, other parts of Eastern and Northern Europe. Willow Bridge offers a few Ukrainian-Canadian folk songs punctuated by the occasional English words and phrases that characterize the "na pju" dialect prominent on the Prairies. There are romantic overtones to many of the songs and, while it is helpful to have some understanding of the cultural allusions, never mind the language. To fully appreciate what you are hearing it’s best to respond to the music on a purely emotional level. I certainly did.
