WEB WATCH

Blah, blah, blog
Knock your sushi pants off
I have often thought of starting up my own blog. A blog, short for weblog, is your online diary to the world. Apart from the fact that I’m not entirely excited about the inner workings of my life – today I was accosted by my neighbour for the alleged theft of her boyfriend’s Diesel jeans – I know I wouldn’t find the time to update. However, I do find the time to read other people’s musings.

In various online communities and blogs, there is a link factor that I like to think of as journal stalking. By piecing bits of commentary with blogger’s friends links, source of story links and uploaded photos, you can track how the information originated and how it spreads. It’s an interesting peek into our online culture.

At least the folks at MIT seem to think so – blogdex.net "is a research project of the MIT Media Laboratory tracking the diffusion of information through the weblog community." You can track the top citations or search the database by URL or subject, then track the site or track the weblogs that reference the site. It’s a geek-voyeur paradise.

If you think all bloggers are self-obsessed ranting wankers and wackos, you’re probably right. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t laugh your ass off at them from time to time. For sheer audacity, drunken hijinks and plain-old asshole behaviour, tuckermax.com cannot be beat. The mission statement says it all: "I drink to excess, take no responsibility for my actions, indulge every whim, rebel against any authority, mock idiots and posers, sleep with more women than is safe or reasonable, and generally just act like a dickhead." Start with the Sushi Pants story – it’s a winner and destined for infamy.
