DAVID ALLAN COE
The Essential David Allan Coe
Legacy/Sony

· There’s a difference between essential and greatest hits.

An outlaw in the mould of such pals as Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe has released dozens of albums – not including best-of records and tributes – and penned numerous chart-toppers for such artists as Johnny Paycheck, Tanya Tucker, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette, The Oakridge Boys and Kid Rock to name just a few. So you’d think that there’d be an abundance of gems, familiar to country-and-western audiences or not, demonstrating why this man is one of the most respected songwriters in country music.

Instead this collection splits the difference, getting weighed down with radio-friendly honky-tonk weepers such as "Now I Lay Me Down to Cheat." There’s nothing wrong with that – Coe’s ballads display more depth than others of their ilk – but that’s the stuff that makes him fit in, not what separates him from the pack.
