THE MINUS FIVE
At the Organ
Yep Roc
· Seven outtakes from the Down With Wilco sessions, plus a video for "The Town That Lost Its Groove Supply."
When supergroup The Minus Five paired with Wilcos Jeff Tweedy et al. for 2003s Down With Wilco, they emerged from their psych-soaked studio sessions with the finest Beatles album never recorded, replete with a "Dear Prudence" homage to rival even the Fab Fours most impudent pilfering.
At the Organ shows glimmers of the same spirit, writ large in full-throttle three-chord garage-rock spirit. But even with an up-tempo version of "The Days of Wine and Booze" and a few other odds and sods, little here could ever be called essential, though it should be noted that album opener "Lyrical Stance" takes the you-rine outta all such rock-crit essentialism to begin with. For completists only.
