A PERFECT CIRCLE

· Play it again, Maynard!
Maybe the band was feeling the pinch of a contractual obligation or maybe the members were just in a really nostalgic mood. A Perfect Circle have come forth with a "new" album in time for the holiday spending spree and, what do ya know, its all cover tunes. Yes, the musical equivalent of a sitcom clip-show. While you wouldnt expect such a venture to hold a candle to the bands previous (original) releases, it does have a certain catchiness to it. Just imagine the possibilities when front man Maynard James Keenan lays waste to John Lennons "Imagine" reset to a macabre funerary pace. Other offerings include Motown crooner Marvin Gayes "Whats Going On?" refurbished industrial-style à la Front 242, and a comparatively contemplative reworking of Led Zeppelins "When the Levy Breaks." But lets not talk about their impotent rendition of Black Flags "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie!" or the scary a cappella tribute to Joni Mitchells "Fiddle and the Drum." Joni freakin Mitchell!? Some songs dont need to be covered.
