HAWKSLEY WORKMAN
Live in Lille (DVD)
Universal

· Les Francais, ils sont tres calme, non?

Recorded in the spring of 2004, Live in Lille offers up 20 live songs by Hawksley Workman and nine of Workman’s videos (which is great for those of us who try to watch lesser versions of them on our computers). As great as the live perfomance is, it sounds just a little too perfect and fails to convey to the viewer the energy and excitement (sexual urgency? groinal ache?) normally found at a Workman show. The overall sound seems overproduced to the point where backing vocals are barely audible and audience feedback minimal. Onstage, it’s all business. Where’s the banter? Sure, the audience is French and most likely can’t understand most of what you’re saying, Hawksley, but come up with something dirty for the anglos. (OK, me. Be dirty for me. Whatever.)

He’s much better live.
