NAS
Street’s Disciple
Sony

· Hey did you hear the news? Nas is getting married! If you didn’t, you will on this album – repeatedly.

Once anointed as rap’s saviour, Nas has returned with Street’s Disciple, a double album sure to be considered his second coming.

This release is full of wisdom and scholarly theories from a man who wants people to know the truth about current U.S. politics, hip hop, and the impact black people have had on contemporary music. On "Bridging the Gap," Nas reunites with his father, avant-garde New York jazz legend, Olu Dara, to create an upbeat timeline of urban music ranging from blues to hip hop.

The album is also about growing up and settling down. Nas has left his worldly ways and has humbled himself to marriage. What’s bothersome about this is the overkill of skits and odes to now-wife, Kelis. Sure, he’s wedded and apparently a better man, but does anyone really care that much?

Minus the matrimonial prose about his Milkshake, with some old-school sounds, Street’s Disciple is a testament to Nas’s future as a leader in hip hop.
