TOM PHILLIPS AND THE MEN OF CONSTANT SORROW
King of the Broken Heart: Live At The Ironwood Stage and Grill
Ruby Moon Records
· Following up Tom Phillipss solo album High Flyer released this March, this is the third album from the Men of Constant Sorrow, the first since 2002s The Essential was released.
In early May, local honky-tonk hero Tom Phillips and his Men of Constant Sorrow took to the Ironwood Stage for two consecutive nights, playing the songs that make their live performances so captivating. Thanks to another well-known local, producer Tim Williams, King of the Broken Heart is exactly what a live album should be an accurate and poignant representation of what the band is about. Like a pint with a sidecar of scotch, the 14 tracks provide enough vintage flavour and punch to have the listener defying last call and Phillips would accept no less. Appearing among the bands most requested songs, Phillips own purely honest "Lack of Rain" shines the brightest, while a brilliant rendition of Warren Zevons "Carmelita" cannot be heard with apathetic ears.
