| Alberta Theatre Projects (ATP) and Enbridge have announced a new award for Canadian playwrights.
The Enbridge playRites Award is a $2,000 prize that will go to a Canadian playwright to help her or him with the development of a new play.
Bob White, artistic director of ATP, says the award is all about putting money into the pockets of Canadian playwrights.
"Its not often that we have the opportunity to slip somebody $2,000," says White. "Playwrights are not necessarily loaded with dough in their pockets, so we gave (Enbridge) the idea (for this award) and they went for it."
Enbridge, an energy transportation and distribution company, says its committed to being a socially responsible business and contributing to community investment. It also supports ATP by helping to fund the Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays, which celebrates its 19th year in January 2005. This is Enbridges second year as a naming sponsor.
"Its been quite wonderful to have a real partnership with Enbridge," says White. "They have a real belief in developing and supporting artists."
The Enbridge playRites Award is intended to help a Canadian playwright with the costs of undertaking a project, such as research, travelling, hiring actors and renting venues for public readings.
Applications are due by 12 p.m. MST on Thursday, January 13, 2005. The recipient of the award will be announced on February 10, 2005.
