Child had a choice in antiwar protest
Re: "Leave children out of protests" by Ian Dauphinee, Letters, December 2-8, 2004. My name is Melinda Bain and I am the mother of the "anti-war child" (featured in a photograph in the November 18-24, 2004 issue of Fast Forward). First of all, with all the media coverage on the war in Iraq, a child is bound to see some or all of the destruction. In regards to the picture and "using my child as a billboard," he had a choice of what slogan he wanted, and he wanted to come to the demonstration. Now he may not know all of the concepts of this war; however, he knows what is right and wrong. Given that, is it wrong to deny my child an opportunity to exercise his right of freedom of speech? I think not.

My son has many questions, such as: "What is Bush doing with the prime minister? What is the prime minister's name? Why is there a soldier with a huge gun around those children?"

As the parent I feel it is my responsibility to answer these questions to the fullest of my knowledge. Is that wrong? No! It is a parent’s responsibility to educate their children. I believe this war is a good teaching tool, and I am very proud my son has compassion and knows the difference between right and wrong. If my son were to have any more questions on any unjust war, I will continue to educate, offer opportunities and support him on what he chooses. Also Mr.Dauphinee, I would like to thank you for your letter. It lets us know that we did impact someone.
