"Non Photo-Blue," the album opener on Pinback’s latest album, is a note-perfect blend of Modest Mouse and Elliot Smith. It’s a surprise, then, that this home-recording duo from San Diego aren’t as well known as those super-indie types (although judging from the press Summer in Abaddon is getting, it might not be long before they are). With 10 songs of lazy, cascading guitar and two-part vocal lullabies, the album is restrained almost to a fault. While most bands would lay on the stomp box and rip the songs wide open in the chorus, Pinback have no such inferiority complex. Instead, they let the tracks stand on their own, a testament to their ever-evolving songwriting.
