As a tot, did you ever take part in the regular measuring-tape ritual? On a monthly basis, while you stood as straight as possible, another line was drawn on the wall, measuring the slow yet steady growth in height. Along the way there were the occasional spurts in growth and each line was marked with the date, from as soon as you could stand, to when, as a snotty teen, you finally gotbored of the whole process.
Released about a year after Kamikaze Syllables, Broken Tricycle is Rant Musics new four-song EP. Not unlike another mark on the wall, this small sample of whats to come from the group is another step in the bands growth, which began with their birth as Celtic-rockers McGnarleys Rant. With Kamikaze Syllables, and a new band name, came an edgier gypsy-rock sound and now the sextet seem to be reaching even more towards the rockier side, particularly with the punkish title track. Rant Music continue to incorporate their own interpretations of gypsy music, as well as a bit of ska, but overall the band are going for a harder sound.
The members of Rant Music seem to thrive on pushing the boundaries of what they do, while becoming a tighter musical unit. In this sense, the EP works. It also succeeds in getting across the point that this is a band that loves to perform, in a hey-look-at-me-convulse-and-wave-my-arms-while-I-sing kind of way. You may not be able to see them, but their overall shtick comes across very well on record
While this EP doesnt contain enough music to make it a huge growth spurt, Rant Music have evolved enough over the past year to reach up and make that mark on the tape.
