| HEY! Give back that gear MFer! Yeah YOU! A lot of musicians have had their gear ripped off lately.
The Mocking Shadows recently held a benefit show to help replace some gear stolen from their keyboard player Mike Little. Another high-profile band, The Plaid Tongued Devils, had their drummer's kit stolen right out of their jam space. "I never thought that I'd get so attached to gear," says the Devils singer Ty Semaka, "but it was like losing a band member who'd worked his ass off for 10 years. I probably humped that thing a 100 times. I even learned how to set it up." Now that last statement is the one that struck me the most, because I know for a fact that lead singers never help with gear. That's why they become lead singers in the first place. That, and they always get their carpets fluffed first. Anyhoo, the band has gone through great lengths to get the word out about the gear. They even have a spot on their website that has detailed photographs (www.thedevils.com/stolendrums.html), so it's not likely that these bastards will get away with it. Hey, BASTARDS! Why don't you try doing something normal to make money, like starting a band! Unless you already have one and you need money to put out your album.
Speaking of which, Sinful Saint has posted on their website (www.sonsofdaughters.com) that they have gear for sale, as they are trying to raise money for manufacturing their new album. How come you've never heard of Sinful Saint? Well, they used to be called Sons of Daughters. Right up until they played at a music conference where people showed up to see Sons and Daughters, the famous band from the U.K. That's a lot of people to have to explain yourself to, so I can see why they did it. Then again, they're used to changing their name, having started their musical careers as Daryl's Grocery Bag (DGB). They felt compelled to start fresh with a new name after taking a left turn from the pop-punk thing that DGB were known for. They recently became a three-piece after losing their bass player and are looking for a multi-instrumentalist to join the band so that they can change their name again. Just kidding. If they do, I have some suggestions for them. You can catch them at a Meter Records Showcase at the Liberty Lounge on Saturday, December 5 with The Failure and One Shot Left.
Speaking of reinvention, Billy Cowsill, Jane Hawley, Tom Phillips, Stewart MacDougall and Tim Williams went into Sundae Sound Studios at the beginning of November to record a double tribute album of lesser-known Hank Williams tunes. The second disc will be originals, inspired by the spirit of Hanky. Does that mean that the songs are about his ghost? That sounds scary. New Calgary label Ruby Moon is putting it out, so keep your eyes peeled! |
