AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB
Love Songs For Patriots
Merge

· The seventh album from Mark Eitzel’s American Music Club is the best reunion album of the year.

Rarely is an artist as simultaneously angry and sad as Mark Eitzel. His piano dirges and soulful laments have all the passion of a person burying a lover. Coming nine years after American Music Club’s breakup, Love Songs For Patriots is crammed with shimmering production and wicked lyrical portraiture making good on American Music Club’s 20-year history. Opening with an ominous, fuzzed-out bass line, the album swings through Cracker twang, Elvis Costello pop and torch songs re-imagined for a modern age. Despite the album’s overall strength, nothing comes close to the show-stopping magnitude of "Patriot’s Heart," a wry and cynical funeral lurch. Poignant, melancholy and undeniably current, Eitzel and company easily top the recent avalanche of indie-rock reunions.
