JORANE
The You and the Now

· Tori Amos never wailed so much.
The cello is a beautiful instrument. Warm and intimate, its sound melds perfectly with the desperate wails and moans emanating from the tiny body of Quebec songstress Jorane. Her latest offering The You and the Now highlights the maturity she has achieved since her last effort, Evapore. The instrumentation is more complex, the songwriting simpler and the mood dark. Here she is joined by the Turtle Island String Quartet, whose instruments provide chilling reverberations to accompany many of the tracks that speak of human loss and desperation, death and rebirth. Heady topics for a girl in her early 20s. Her dark, exotic sound clings to the mind long after the last string has been plucked. Vocally, Jorane has matured too and developed into a full-blown powerhouse à la Tori Amos to whom she bears a striking vocal resemblance. Regardless, her mischievousness and the depth of her topics resonate through the entire album.
