| In his review of The Motorcycle Diaries ("A road movie for radicals: The Motorcycle Diaries is touching and believable in portrayal of youthful idealism," Film, October 7-13, 2004), Timothy Heck fails to mention an important detail: the fantastic original score. Gustavo Santoalalla has woven a dynamic, beautiful and at times poignant tapestry of South American musical flavours to underpin this film. He combines hard-rocking electric guitar licks with flawless acoustic guitar and native instruments such as the charango (a small stringed instrument that looks something like a ukulele) as well as hints of Incan flutes, violins and kick-ass Latin percussion. I rushed out and bought the CD the day after seeing the film and was not disappointed.
As for The Motorcycle Diaries being "a road movie for radicals," how about calling it a road movie for human beings?
