DJs join month-long fashion showcase in support of music education
Without music, fashion doesn’t come to life. Without fashion, the musician is just a person stringing together a series of rhythmic sounds. Hence, music and fashion are synonymous. Pick any period of history, and you will see that the style of dress echoes the style of beat. Popular music continually revolutionizes the way we talk, dance and dress.

To celebrate this dynamic relationship between beauty and beats, Holt Renfrew is launching Vinyl, September 7 to October 2, a month-long showcase of style in the groove.

"In music as in fashion, on the dance floor as on the catwalk, Vinyl is where it all comes together," says Holt Renfrew fashion director Barbara Atkin.

It doesn’t matter if you are into live bands, pop divas or DJ sets, Vinyl promises to have a style to suit your musical tastes.

Holt Renfrew recognizes music’s significance in our lives, and has partnered with the Coalition for Music Education in Canada (CMEC) and the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to ensure the vitality of music programs in Canadian schools.

"Making music is an act of intelligence – not just a contributor to intelligence," says Ingrid Whyte, executive director of the CMEC. "It needs to be a key part of an educational system that prepares young people for the careers of the 21st century. Music is a critical component to a balanced education."

The CMEC has a membership of more than 20 music education-based organizations nationwide. They are a diverse group of Canadians who are working to ensure that every Canadian child has the right and the opportunity to a quality music education program. The mission of the coalition is to raise the awareness and understanding of the role that music and music education play in Canadian culture.

According to the coalition, Canadian students are not receiving the level of music education they deserve. "Provincial governments across Canada have made a number of profound changes in their educational systems," states a CMEC press release. "The changes have been significant and one of the results has been to move away from a broad-based curriculum to one that is more technically focused. As a result, our music departments have often been the hardest hit."

As a charitable partner, Holt Renfrew aims to raise more than $50,000 during the month of Vinyl through various fundraising activities.

On a local level, you can drop by Holt Renfrew and make a monetary donation of as little as $2, or purchase a customized T-shirt or brooch. The latter is this season’s must-have, created by local fashion designer Jodi Opshahl of Jodio, whose swimwear has been featured in Elle USA this past summer.

As a grand finale, on October 2, Holt Renfrew will donate two per cent of national sales to the CMEC.

Vinyl at Holt Renfrew Calgary promises to be a musical spectacular as well as a fashion frenzy. Those of you who caught the show preview with Carey Chang, or the Private Shopping Night party with Jon Delerious, know that the fashion retailer is serious about mixing its fashions with the perfect beats.

Each Vinyl Saturday will host a local beat-tastic DJ paired with a fashion event. Upcoming are DJ Lotus Queen with Theory and Teenflo on September 18. The night will also showcase what’s hot in club wear, and a few cosmetic tricks to maintain your look. Then, learn how to cross the velvet rope in style and rock your body with DJ Kav from Tantra on September 25. American designers Marc Jacobs and DKNY are paired with DJ Djewel on October 2 as the last call for Vinyl.
