TREEBALL/AARON BOOTH
Intercontinental Pop Exchange 4
Endearing

· New songs from both sides of the Atlantic.

The concept of a split album isn’t a new one, but Winnipeg-based Endearing Records have added a bit of a twist by making their split-release series intercontinental. International Pop Exchange 4 is no exception: Treeball is a British-Finnish hybrid fronted by U.K. writer-producer Nick Triani, while Canadians (first in Calgary, now in Toronto) have loved Aaron Booth for years.

It’s a good pairing, all in all. The transition between Treeball and Booth halfway through the eight-track disc is almost seamless – if it weren’t for the fact that Treeball features male-female duet vocals while Booth sings solo, I might not have known there’d been a switch. It’s all quite pretty and definitely pop – there’s a teen-movie-ready selection here from each group ("Blue" from Treeball, "In Love With Ourselves" from Booth). Booth’s "The Many Lead the One" is the standout track here, quietly capturing the search for meaning he and his peers undertake daily.

3/5
