If you’re saving up your pennies for school supplies (whatever those may be…), you’ll be happy to know that there’s a free show happening at Shaw Millennium Park on Saturday, August 28. An early afternoon skateboard competition will be followed up by bands from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Slated to perform are Fasten, The Amazing Larrys, Fan The Fire, The Mad Cow Boys and The Falling Pianos. Not bad for a free show!

Inner Surge’s second album, Matrika, will get its official release at a 10 p.m. show on Saturday, September 4 at the Underground. The 12-track disc was recorded at Organic Sounds studios here in Calgary. In addition to the new CD, T-shirts, buttons and stickers with the new Inner Surge logo will be available at the release party, as will supporting performances by Johnny Incognito and Stinkhammer. You can preview the tracks as MP3s at www.innersurge.com (but remember, MP3s don’t come with nifty album art).

A studio spotting: the fellows from The Silent Auction were seen doing some recording with Al Irving at Sundae Sound Studios earlier this month. Those recordings should be coming out on an EP right around Christmas. They also have a spiffy new website at www.thesilentauction.com, which went up in mid-July. That site will keep you posted on all their upcoming happenings, including some shows coming up in September, and should have MP3s of the new material available in the near future.

As you read this, the Fake Cops are taking the eastern half of Canada by storm. They’ve joined forces with I Can Put My Arm Back On You Can’t for a six-date tour that includes Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, as well as smaller cities. The tour is in support of the 12-inch re-pressing of their EP Absolutely Your Credit Is Excellent But in a Certain Way we Also Need Cash, which came out as a Mockingbird Records CD release earlier this year. The new vinyl album is a split release with Vancouver’s Black Rice – and the Cops are celebrating with a trip eastward. Check out the full schedule at www.fakecops.com, and tell your eastern friends and relatives to get out and rock!

The Calgary Renaissance Singers are recruiting new members. The a cappella choir, which usually has around 24 members, performs early music at two major concerts and at numerous other events throughout the year. All voices are welcome, but tenors are particularly needed right now. If you’re interested, e-mail conductor@renaissance-singers.com and visit www.renaissance-singers.com for more information.

Catching that back to school fever? SAIT’s Continuing Education division is now offering a digital sound and music certificate of achievement. The program consists of seven courses covering audio production, digital sound, location and studio recording, audio for new media, and business for sound engineers. Two of the courses – Digital Sound I and Digital Sound II – are being offered this fall. Head to www.sait.ca/coned for more information or pick up a free SAIT course calendar at various locations around town.
