| On September 2, Eighth Avenue S.W. comes alive with the inaugural Inside Out Street Fair from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Stretching from Olympic Plaza to First Street S.W., the fair will present entertainment, food and even whisky tastings designed to let everyone know all about what’s going on in and outside Calgary’s burgeoning Cultural District this fall.
Ever wanted to know what it feels like to star in The Mikado? Calgary Opera will host stage-makeup demos. How about participating in a New Orleans-style funeral parade without the messy detail of having a dead guy on hand? This is the place for you. Or, for the sadists among us, "enjoy" a Car Horn Symphony composed by Jennifer O’Neill especially for this event. Other highlights to look and listen for include The Big Squeeze, a jam for accordion and bagpipe players organized by Visuel, and performances by Razzama Jazz Big Band and jazz fiddler Karl Roth.
After the car-symphony aficionados have long gone home, the fun continues with the First Thursday Crawl until the wee hours of the morning – or until the whisky runs out. Look for solid food and drink at the Cellar, Bear & Kilt Freehouse, James Joyce Irish Pub, Teatro, Drinkwaters Grill, Baraka, Conga Room, Pita Express, Prairie Ink Restaurant, Good Earth Café, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Piq Niq, Gypsy Bistro Wine Bar and Auburn Saloon.
Calgary’s Cultural District is an idea that has been kicked around for the past few years and Inside Out brings home in dramatic fashion just how many creative people live and work in this city. And after memories of that car-horn symphony and single-malt whisky start to fade, the festival’s organizers hope you still remember that the establishments, venues and entertainment located in Calgary’s downtown are available on a year-round basis. |
