THE GOLDEN VIRGINS
Songs of Praise
XL
· Personality crisis.
The Golden Virgins don't know who they want to be. Gripping strands from Mercury Rev one minute, then Ash-like punk-pop the next, Songs of Praise is a mess from start to finish.
When the focus stays on the songs rather than the radio, the results are nice enough the sombre "Light in Her Window" just avoids sounding like new wank Brit-faves Keane while "I Don't Want No-One But You" gets bonus points for xylophone and candy-sweetness.
Still, it's hard to shake the feeling that The Golden Virgins are little more than a bar band who've got ahead of themselves.
