| Over far too many drinks at the Ship & Anchor one night, the debate began. The supremacy of sport based on the Summer Olympic Games versus the Winter Olympic Games. This essentially boiled down to which events sucked, which events were real sports and, "where the hell are the games between now and Whistler?"
As I cast my vote for the winter events, by extolling the virtues of snowboarding and ice hockey, I was pressed to come up with solid strikes against the summer games. All I could remember was doping charges, the insanity of beach volleyball as an Olympic sport and more doping charges. I decided I needed a preview of the non-stop television coverage to fully prepare myself for the onslaught of the summer games.
The official site located at athens2004.com provides comprehensive details on the athletes, sports and venues of the games. The site is easy to navigate, considering the sheer mass of information. Highlights include public transport schedules, where the gay bars are and screensavers with those creepy little mascots. Links are provided for press conferences, news articles and medal results.
A pull-down menu allows you to access a brief logistical view of the sports included in the games, with links to organizations and federations that represent the sport. This will helpfully equip you to defend the majesty of table tennis, or explain the scoring system of fencing to that foxy specimen at the next table. Dont forget to pick up some trivia in the Olympic Firsts section to impress your friends.
"For the first time," it states, "a trampoline pictogram has been created for use during the Athens 2004 Olympic Games."
