Rock Action: Volume 1
Rock Action
· Mogwai: record moguls.
As far as band-driven record labels go, it's usually safe to assume that maintaining a wary distance is best. Look at the Beastie Boys's Grand Royal recently so broken and useless it was liquidated on EBay to the highest bidder (bids starting at a mere $10,000 US).
Mogwai, however, have never harboured world domination hopes for their own Rock Action imprint, starting a label purely for the sake of putting out a few great (and admittedly not so great) records that nobody else would. And so, with this first volume collection, we get samplings from the likes of Scotland's brilliant (and tragically under-appreciated) Zephyrs, the mindscrews of Cex, and even a look back at the first time Papa M sang (from the aptly titled Papa M Sings EP, of course).
Still, despite the other highs, the star attraction of the Rock Action stable remains Mogwai themselves, present with the new stunner "Space Raiders" and their very first 7-inch A-side, the ethereal "Tuner." If the label had never released anything else, that one gem of hushed emergency alone would assure Rock Action priceless status.
